I wrote something about closing all back exits and escape routes when we take on something or start a project so we can force ourselves to be fully committed on that particular project on hand. Applying this idea to business or to a job you are undertaking could also do wonders simply because you have no other alternatives.
I have seen friends who do things half heartedly because they know they have something to fall back on if they did not succeed. Most of them just gave up half way and go back to their easy lives.
When you take on whatever projects, do so as if your live depends on it. Better still make it into one that your lives really depend on it. When starting a business, plan as meticulously as you can. Do all your research as thoroughly as you possibly can. If you think that the business can be a winner and you have full confidence, throw yourself into it with all your commitments. Sell your car, mortgage your house and pour everything you have into that business, so much so that if the business fails, you go down together.
This realization will keep you wide awake and really commit yourself to the business. Your whole livelihood depends on the very survival of the business. There is no more escape for you and you will be amazed at yourself and the things you can achieve when you are in that situation. Things like going after your creditors, begging, crying, ranting will become part of you. These are things that you never dreamed you can do. You have to force yourself to it until it becomes so natural for you.
Likewise if you decide to switch jobs. Commit yourself fully to the new job and never remind yourself of the good times you had with your old job. Throw yourself into the new environment as if your life depended on it. Think like if you loose that job, you and your family will starve. If you are half hearted, and keep thinking that you can always look for a new job if you don’t like the present one, you will never be able to do well.
