For security reasons, nearly all houses have some kind of grills fitted over our front doors and every window. Frankly speaking, these grills only gives us false sense of security. First, if you look at some of the grills, it is just nailed onto the window frames and anyone armed with a crowbar can easily pry them off without too much effort or noise.
Install your security grills the proper way.
When you buy a house and you have decided that you won’t be able to sleep peacefully without grills of some sort, make sure you get those grill makers to install them the proper way. The proper way means the frames of the grill should be flushed into the frames of your door. Not over it. When the metal frames are inside the door frame, it makes it quite impossible or at least it makes it very difficult to be pried out. Give these instructions when the grill maker turns up to take the measurements so that he knows you want it done that way.
Use stainless steel tubing if you can afford it.
Using Stainless Steel instead of the normal mild steel will cost you maybe 3 times the price, but it will last you more than 3 times longer. Its definitely more durable and it’s almost maintenance free other than maybe giving it a good mop once a month to keep it shining. A mild steel one will start to rust after 2 years and then its a yearly painting affair for you. You should be careful not to get shortchanged because some unscrupulous people will try to cheat you with a lower quality steel than the one they promised. It looks exactly the same and no one, even an experienced guy, can tell the difference. There’s no way that you will know you have been cheated until you actually sees rust on the tubes. So get a trustworthy contractor. Ask around. News of those who are not honest often travels very fast.
