What are lightning arrestors? As the name implies, a lightning arrestor is a device to arrest lightning. It is general knowledge that lightnings are dangerous. It can cause material and physical harm and in extreme cases, lives can be lost. All the components are made of copper as copper is a very good conductor of electricity and is the most affordable. Some may use aluminum to further save costs.

The most important component is course the Lightning Rods. These rods comes in various specification and it will be best to consult an expert on the kind you need for you area.

The Conductors can come as copper cables or copper strip. The diameter and the thickness of the conductor will also depends on many factors so again, consult an expert for opinions.

Lastly comes the earthing rods or the ground rods. These are piled into the ground so it has be deep enough to disperse the high voltage that the lightning cause to avoid harm. There are devices to measure of the earthing are good enough to absorb the electrical surge.

As lightning always strikes the highest point, it is common sense to install the lightning rods at the highest point of a building. For a normal single storey house that would of course mean the highest part of the roof, the apex.

Depending on the size of the house, the lightning arrestor installer will calculate the number of lightning rods needed, the specification of the conductors and of course the measurement of the earth conductivity.

Lightning Arrestors Is Not Suitable For DIY

As the installation of lightning arrestors requires some complex equipments and skills, these kind of job is definitely not suitable to be done by yourself. If the system is not properly installed, it will not be effective.

The parts and components needed are not cheap either so it will be a big waste of money of the job is not properly done.
