Many a times, DIY enthusiasts carries their enthusiasm a little overboard. We get carried away after accomplishing many small projects ourselves that we begin to think we can do everything ourselves. However, there are some things that really needs professional help. I have seen people attempting on projects that are far too ambitious and in the end, they either abandon the projects midway or in the end they are forced to seek for help because they realised they don’t have the means to finish what they started. They ended paying twice the money than if they had sought professional help in the first place.
There a hundred and one things that you can DIY around the house. Minor repairs like the replacing the common light bulb for example should be done by yourself and if you don’t know how, you should learn. Small minor repairs, like repairing a leaking faucet are all within your capabilities. Replacing a door knob or lock is also very easy. All these are examples of what you can and should DIY. It saves you money, time and the frustration of waiting for the repairmen to turn up.
Projects that needs special tools and expertise, like breaking down a wall or erecting a new one. Extension of new electrical points. Tiling your car porch. These examples need some special skills. Some really gets very ambitious and try to break down the kitchen partition by themselves, not realizing that even breaking walls needs special knowledge. It’s not a matter of using a 6 lb hammer and start demolishing. If not done in a proper way, you could end up breaking down more than the intended wall.
Likewise, tiling the car porch also need special skills or else you might see water being retained at the center of the car porch during rainy days. Just the other day, a friend of mine fell through the ceiling and hurt his neck because he went into his ceiling, trying to install wires for his new TV. So these are things that are beyond our capabilities and it is best left to the professional. Not everything can be DIY-ed. If that is the case, many workmen will be starving don’t you think?
