Our family room circuit breaker trips during the night when nothing is
apparently on (such as the TV, DVD player).

I reset the circuit breaker and everything is ok - we can watch TV,
play a DVD, or whatever during the evening.
The next morning the circuit breaker is tripped again.

What could the problem be? A bad circuit breaker?

Thank you,
Brian

In your comments on checking a circuit breaker you mention to choose any socket in the house and put it in thee off position. Is the socket any outlet you can plug a plug in,and if so,how do you put it in the off position? Then you say to use a screwdriver to pry open openings and find earth terminal,is tht the ground wire screw?,and what and where are the two slots on the bottom?I'm not a moron and i know a little about electricity but I'm confused by your terminology. If you could show with a picture it would help a great deal.Thank you, Coolberry.

My circuit breaker tripping every time when there is a lightning. Could it be due to the earthing problem.

Most probably not. If you have an inefficient earthing, the circuit breaker won't function so well. The main culprit in this case might be the sensitivity of the circuit breakers itself. Get an experienced electrician to have a look at the specs of the circuit breaker and let him decide on one that is less sensitive but good enough to give you all round protection.

I was having a lot of problems with my circuit breaker tripping earlier this summer. I had a company that did home wiring inspectionand circuit testing using infrared and some type of computer setup. I think the name was CurrentSafe, somewhere up near Fort Worth I believe. They found some wiring problems behind a wall in the basement that was causing problem.
