Writing a good resume and application letter

Most graduates today looking for jobs register themselves with job recruitment sites. It is an effective way of job hunting in these modern times. I don’t know if this trend is good or bad, but it really takes away the quality of the job hunting process. My opinion is, if the job came about with more effort and leg work from the job hunter, he or she will appreciate the job more. Take for instance the case of writing your resume.

In my time, when we want to apply for jobs, we send in our application letter that were handwritten by us. We list down our personal qualifications, our work experience and all our expertise. Together with that letter, we attach our certificates and testimonials. It was tedious.

For the prospective employer, he gets hundreds of application letters, all written in different writing styles and handwriting. From the grammar used and the spelling mistakes he sees, he will be able to somewhat determine the quality of the applicant. So before he shortlist the candidates, he already have a rough idea of the people he will be interviewing.

Nowadays, applicants use softwares to churn out their application letters that are all ready made for them. All they have to do is to insert their particulars and the software will print out a very professionally written letter. It looks well and good for the applicants, but think of the guy who is going over those applications. He will be bored stiff looking at the stack of computer generated application letters. He will not be able to determine your command of the language that the letter is written in. It will be tough for him to shortlist those candidates.

If, among the hundreds of similarly written letters, there is one or two that is handwritten neatly in the conventional way, don’t you think that applicant is going to stand out among the hundreds? Before the interview is called, those who took pain and effort to write in has already gained the upper hand. So, when the job hunting season starts, make sure you write out your job application letter yourself. There are thousands of web sites that teaches people how to write a good resume and a good application letter. Learn them. You will be the first to get a job.
